Emotional Affair, the Wrong Label for a Real Problem

An emotional affair is a gentle, psychologized way of talking about a real problem. It's a label that does not sound as insidious as it is. This term is another casualty of our psychologized culture, the endless twisting of words to fit within our self-esteem jargon so we can describe our sin without making the culprit sound as evil as they are.

Emotions come from our thoughts.
Emotions point to our thoughts, whether the emotions are happy or sad.
Emotions are not the problem.
Emotions should not be the primary way to describe what's happening.

We have "thought problems," and our emotions affirm those bad thoughts. Emotions are always consistent with a person's thoughts, whether those thoughts are happy or sad.

An accurate description says deep-seated narcissistic evil motivations have captivated the mind, even potentially destroying relationships. If a person has an emotional affair, their thoughts are self-centered, intended for evil, seeking to cover up sexual desires (deception), willing to sacrifice two marriages, and is on the trail to adultery. The emotional affair is not the trailhead but speaks to someone who has been on the path—probably for decades.

However, suppose you call it an emotional affair. In that case, it does not sound too bad, and the relationships do not appear to be on the precipice of destruction that will be generational.

Labeling matters
