Balance of power, in international relations, the posture and policy of a nation or group of nations protecting itself against another nation or group of nations by matching its power against the power of the other side.

Power refers to the Monopoly of Force .
"Power is defined as a possibility to influence others." The use of power has evolved over the centuries. Gaining prestige, honor, and reputation is one of the central motives for gaining power in human nature.
Power is an attribute of particular actors in their interactions, as well as a social process that constitutes the social identities and capacities of actors. International relations scholars use the term polarity to describe the distribution of power in the international system.
