From being wrongfully imprisoned for 37 years to becoming a contestant on America’s Got Talent, Williams’ journey is proof that one can rise above even the toughest of circumstances. In this YouTube video, we will explore his remarkable story, highlighting his resilience and musical talents.
Background
Archie Williams was born in Louisiana in 1961, and from a young age, he had a passion for music. He was part of his high school choir and often performed at events in his community. When he turned 22, Williams’ life took a drastic turn. In 1983, he was wrongfully convicted of rape and attempted murder, a crime he did not commit. Despite his innocence, he was sentenced to life in prison.
37 years of wrongful imprisonment
Williams spent the next 37 years in prison, serving time at Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola. During his time in prison, he found solace in music, performing regularly at events within the prison. He also became known for his legal work, helping fellow inmates with their cases and securing many innocent men’s freedom.
In 2019, Williams' case was re-examined, and new DNA evidence was uncovered that proved his innocence. On March 21, 2019, he was released from prison, and after years of wrongful imprisonment, he could finally return to his family and friends a free man.
America's Got Talent
Williams’ talent for music caught the attention of America’s Got Talent. On May 26th, 2020, he auditioned for the show, leaving the judges and viewers in awe. With his rendition of Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” Williams left the judges emotional and earned a “Golden Buzzer” from judge Simon Cowell, guaranteeing his spot in the show’s quarterfinals.
In his next performance, Williams showcased his musicality with a rendition of Steve Wonder’s “Love’s in Need of Love Today.” In his performance, Williams’ voice conveyed the depth of his experience, touching everyone in the audience, and thousands watching at home.
Interviews
Archie Williams has been interviewed about his experience, and his story has been covered in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Today Show, and Good Morning America.
In one interview, he spoke about how he would sing to his fellow inmates, “They’d say, ‘Man, you make me feel good. You make me forget where I am.’ And to be in a position to carry a message that could lift somebody up, I was motivated to do that.”
In another interview, Williams spoke about his time in prison, “I would lie in bed at night and sing, ‘Amazing Grace.’ It gave me the strength to go on. I knew if I just held on, then one day, my world would change.”
Conclusion
Archie Williams’ story is one of resilience and determination. Despite being wrongfully imprisoned for 37 years, he managed to find solace in music and became an inspiration to many. His talent and passion for music have earned him a spot on America’s Got Talent, where he’s dazzling audiences with his renditions of various songs. Williams’ story embodies the human capacity for resilience and the power of hope, serving as a testament that one is never too old or too disadvantaged to chase their dreams.
