Kingdom Character – Those Who Mourn! Matthew 5:4

Pastor Rick Lancaster continues a series in the gospel of Matthew: The Savior-King and His Kingdom. The Sermon on the Mount has been one of the most influential writings in human history. It opens with the Beatitudes – proverb-like statements that are rich with spiritual teaching. Rick opens the second of the beatitudes that addresses those who mourn. God certainly does comfort us when we mourn the loss of a loved one, but this beatitude goes much deeper than that. It is a key character trait of someone living in God’s Kingdom.

Matthew’s gospel serves as a bridge between the Old and New Testaments. Matthew seeks to prove to the Jews that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. For those of us who are not Jews, Matthew helps us to see our Savior-King more clearly and through his gospel learn to live well in Christ’s kingdom today.
