I didn't really figure this out until I was on the mini tours and I had always watched the players that were better than me and dominating with their driver. Back then, I didn't know nearly as much as I do about the swing now. I was always trying to figure out what was going on, I always set up with a little bit of a shut club face... so I always felt like I had to work a little bit to get the ball to draw. And I like to play a little bit of a draw and I'd have the club face closed, and I tried to hold that face square through contact. Now, at that point, I felt like my swing was held together with duct tape and shoestrings, like it was just gonna fall apart at any moment, and I could never get complete control of it.

When I looked at those better players, instead of their face being a little closed, I started to notice their faces were open. Heck, one of the best players on this tour, won a boatload of money, seemed like he won everything. His face was around 15 degrees open. He's sitting the ball dead straight. And I'm thinking to myself, if my club face was 15 degrees open at address, I ain't gonna be able to keep this daggone thing on this planet. It feels like it's gonna slice off 30-40 yards to the right. I tried it. and what I realized is I was trying to control the club face too much. I started to switch to a feeling of letting the face open in the backswing, almost like a door hinge.
