Judas Priest - Painkiller - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
This song is one of the most difficult vocal songs you could ever choose to learn. I won't say it was easy, but check it out and let me know how you think I did.
Judas Priest - Painkiller - Cover - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy 4K
When I chose to record this song, I realized I had two paths I could take.
1). Do my best to sing it just like Rob Halford, predominantly in reinforced falsetto.
2). Stretch myself and try to sing most of the entire song in a belted chest resonant sound, which is literally 3 to 4 times more difficult to do.
I chose the latter.
I thought "What the heck! Practice what you preach and see how far you can make it in this song, belting almost entirely in chest voice instead of relying on a reinforced falsetto."
While I know full good and well I will be criticized for not sounding just like Rob, I am fully prepared for that, because that is not what I am looking to get out of this song from a "personal best" standpoint.
It would have been much, much easier to stay in falsetto throughout this song (and still it would not have been any easy task), but this song is a beast to take on, no matter how you sing it.
If you listen closely to Rob Halford's vocals, you'll notice he basically has two voices.
A belted chest sound that usually peaks at around an A4.
And a falsetto that kicks in around B-flat all the way up to a F#5.
Rob has learned to bring his falsetto down into his upper belting register to have a powerful low falsetto register.
But this can also become problematic, because there is a tendency to rely on bridging early and going into falsetto instead of pulling chest voice up into this area to keep the chest voice nice and strong.
With all that said I give you...
PAIN, PAIN, KILLER, KILLER!
