গ্রামের সাধারণ মানুষের প্রয়ােজনীয় জিনিসপত্রের পসরা নিয়েই হাট বসে। খুব বেশি দামি জিনিস সেখানে বিক্রি হয় না। সাধারণত কৃষিজীবী, মৎস্যজীবী এবং ক্ষুদ্র কুটিরশিল্পীদের সাধারণ পণ্যসামগ্রী নিয়েই হাট বসে। সেসব পণ্য গ্রামীণ শ্রমজীবী মানুষের দৈনন্দিন প্রয়ােজন মেটাতে সক্ষম।
হাট-বাজার এই সমাসবদ্ধ শব্দ প্রায় একই অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হলেও হাট ও বাজারের বৈশিষ্ট্য কিছুটা ভিন্ন। যেসব জায়গায় সপ্তাহে একদিন বা দুইদিন পণ্যসামগ্রী বেচা-কেনার জন্য প্রচুর লােকের সমাগম হয় সেসব স্থানকে হাট বলে । আর যেসব স্থানে প্রাতাদন দোকান বসে কিংবা যেসব স্থানে স্থায়ীভাবে অনেকগুলাে ছােটো-বড়াে দোকান আছে সেসব স্থানকে বাজার বলে। এসব বাজারের উন্মুক্ত স্থানে প্রতিদিন সকালে মাছ, দুধ, তরি-তরকারি ক্রয়-বিক্রয়ের জন্য গ্রামের লােকজন জমায়েত হয়; সেগুলাে গ্রাম্য বাজার। তবে এইসব কোনাে কোনাে বাজারকে কেন্দ্র করেই বাজারের আশপাশের উক্ত ব্যাপক জায়গা জুড়ে বসে। সাপ্তাহিক হাট। হাটের দিনে দূর-দূরান্ত থেকে ব্যবসায়ীরা বিপুল পণ্যসামগ্রী নিয়ে সমবেত হয়। আর আশপাশের গ্রামের মানুষেরা। সাপ্তাহিক প্রয়ােজনীয় জিনিসপত্রাদি কেনার জন্য দলে দলে আসতে থাকে হাটে। বেচাকেনাও হয় প্রচুর। সন্ধ্যার পর ক্রেতারা পণ্যসামগ্রী নিয়ে বাড়ি ফিরতে শুরু করে। অতঃপর বিক্রেতারা দোকান গুছিয়ে চলে যায় যার যার গন্তব্যে। তাই এসব হাটকে বাজার। বলা যায় না। তবে অঞ্চলভেদে হাটকে বাজারও বলে ।

The market is filled with the necessary items of the common people of the village. Very expensive things are not sold there. The bazaar is usually stocked with the common goods of farmers, fishermen and small cottagers. Those products are able to meet the daily needs of rural working people.
