Bohdan Khmelnytsky, a Ukrainian military and political commander, is best remembered for spearheading a mid-17th-century insurrection against Polish domination that established the Cossack Hetmanate, an independent Ukrainian state. Khmelnytsky was born in 1595 in Podolia, Ukraine, part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He became a Cossack in 1620 and a hetman after studying in Poland. Khmelnytsky led a Cossack, peasant, and other rebellion against Polish rule in Ukraine in 1648. Khmelnytsky's relationships with Russia and the Ottoman Empire helped the revolt succeed. However, the relationship with Russia soured, and Khmelnytsky negotiated a pact with the Poles in 1654, granting the Cossack Hetmanate some autonomy within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Khmelnytsky died in 1657, and Ukraine and Poland still debate his legacy. Many Ukrainians consider Khmelnytsky a hero for helping Ukraine gain independence, but others criticise him for his affiliations with foreign powers and his forces' crimes during the struggle.
