Chevy Silverado 06 DIY Fixes for Rear Doors, Lights & Rims. See my tip for painting rims w/o masking
In this exciting episode of TGIF365, we take on the challenge of restoring a 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500. The truck had seen better days and was in need of some much-needed repairs. Join us as we take you through the restoration process, step-by-step.
First up, we tackle the rear door. The door was not opening, which is a common issue with older Chevy Silverados. We removed the door panel and discovered that the door handle was broken, and the rod that opens the door bottom latch clip was no longer holding the rod in place. We replaced the handle and bent the end of the rod, making the clip obsolete. After some adjustments, the door was working like new.
Next, we moved on to the headlights. The old headlights had become cloudy and yellowed, making it difficult to see at night. We replaced them with new, brighter headlights and installed new bulbs. The difference was amazing – not only did the truck look better, but we could also see much more clearly while driving at night.
The third brake light was also in need of replacement. The old light had become discolored and faded, which not only looked bad but also wasn't working correctly. We installed a new, brighter LED brake light that also had much brighter bed lights.
Lastly, we painted the rims. The old rims had become stained, and the clear coat was almost gone, which was detracting from the overall look of the truck. We used a simple trick – dish soap as masking tape – to paint the rims quickly and easily. The result was stunning – the rims looked like new and complemented the rest of the truck's upgrades perfectly.
We show you how to fix common problems and how to upgrade your truck affordably. We also share our experience with painting the rims using dish soap as masking tape, which is an excellent hack for anyone looking to paint their own rims.
