Meanwhile, in the real world, the historic summit between Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping inspired much fear and loathing from Washington's permanent bureaucracy - albeit disguised in weasel words and 'exceptionalist' dogma about 'the unbeatable power of US leadership'.
