India's parliament has disqualified senior opposition leader Rahul Gandhi from the lower house after he was sentenced to two years in prison for defamation.

Gandhi, an MP from Wayanad in Kerala, had made comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname at an election rally in 2019. The Congress party had described the verdict as "erroneous and unsustainable" and pledged to fight the disqualification "both legally and politically".

The party has also called for an investigation by a joint parliamentary committee into allegations of financial fraud by the Adani Group, which it says may be behind the action against Gandhi.
