Joanie is a devoted nurse who works at Mercy Memorial Hospital. A patient Ruth Atkins arrives at the hospital in a comatose state due to a rare fatal illness, she has had no visitors and her son is in the navy stationed out in the Bearing sea. When a man visits Mrs. Atkins later that day, Joanie is thrilled, but her and her colleague assumes he is the minister that the hospital had notified. As the minister keeps visiting, Mrs. Atkins' condition improves, and she eventually emerges from her coma, baffling all the doctors.

Joanie informs Mrs. Atkins' son, that his mother is on the path to a full recovery and she is moved out of intensive care and into a private room. Joanie visits her there to return her bible left in ICU. Mrs. Atkins reveals that her husband had given her the bible and is confused to how she had it. She shows Joanie a photo of her husband, who was mistaken for the minister and explains that he passed away two years ago.
