SURVIVAL SITREP - U.S. Launches Airstrikes in Syria After Military Bases Attacked

On March 23rd (approximately 1:38 p.m. local time) , a U.S. contractor was killed and five U.S. service members and one additional U.S. contractor were wounded after a one-way unmanned aerial vehicle struck a maintenance facility on a Coalition base near Hasakah in northeast Syria. The intelligence community assess the UAV to be of Iranian origin.

In retaliation, President Biden authorized U.S. Central Command forces to conduct precision airstrikes in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The airstrikes were conducted in response to these attack as well as a series of recent attacks against Coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the IRGC.

With an estimated 900 troops deployed in the country. The U.S. military presence in Syria began in 2015 as part of the international coalition fighting against the Islamic State (IS) group.

The U.S. military has maintained several bases in Syria, including a military airbase in Al-Tanf, in southeastern Syria, and a base in northeastern Syria. These bases serve as key locations for U.S. forces to carry out operations against the IS group, train and equip local forces, and maintain a military presence in the region. However, the situation on the ground in Syria is complex, with multiple actors involved in the conflict, and the presence of U.S. military bases has been a contentious issue for some parties involved.
