In August of last year, Deputy Sarah Merriman was run over while trying to arrest 17-year-old Jamon Cheatham. The body cam footage was shown in court on Wednesday during a hearing in which Cheatham's defense attorneys asked for a lower bond than the $150,000 that had been set after his arrest.
Sheriff Leon Lott expressed hope that the case would bring about positive changes in the bail system for repeat offenders. However, the judge denied the request for a lower bond after hearing emotional testimony from Deputy Merriman, who suffered lifelong injuries and was out of work for two months.
Despite pleas from Cheatham's mother and attorneys to reduce his bond, the judge said that he should not have been granted bond in the first place due to his criminal history, which includes attempted murder, carjacking, and weapons charges.
