How to Build a Chicken Feeder for FREE // Raising Meat Chickens {Week 3}

I’m building a feed trough for Cornish cross meat chickens using free recycled (upcycled) materials. Meat chickens eat a lot of food and to make sure our hens never run out of feed we cut up and old gutter to make a water resistant and mess resistant feeding trough.

We purchased 30 Cornish cross females from Meyer Hatchery. Cornish cross are incredibly fast growers – from hatch to butcher in only 8 weeks. We’ve done quite a bit of research on this and feel very well prepared but everyone knows there’s no replacement for experience. If you’ve thought about raising meat chickens but just haven’t made that commitment yet I hope you can look to our experiences as something you can learn from. If we can do it, so can you!

💪 AVG. WEIGHTS:
Week 1 – 3.8oz
Week 2 – 12.0oz
Week 3 – 1lb, 2.6oz

Our meat chickens are now 3 weeks old and are ready to move from the brooder into the chicken tractor. However, we’ve been dealing with crummy cold weather for the past several days and I was not comfortable moving the birds into an unconditioned living space when the temperatures were dipping below freezing. In the meantime, though, we transitioned the birds from chick start to broiler feed and built a couple new feeders from used parts.

The birds are growing really well and all appear to be healthy. It’s hard to believe butcher day is less than 5 weeks away.
