As a four-star prospect emerging from the basketball factory that is Oak Hill Academy, Keyontae Johnson arrived at the University of Florida facing a wave of pressure. Then he went ahead and silenced all of his doubters almost immediately with a strong freshman year that saw him average 8.1 points and 6.4 rebounds, while starting 20 of the Gators’ 36 games. After a full offseason of training, Johnson entered his sophomore year with even more to prove. Now that he was bigger, faster, and stronger, it led to the most productive season of his career, tacking on an additional six-points per game to his average and turning himself into one of the best players in one of the country’s strongest conferences. By the time his third year at Florida rolled around, all eyes were on him. After Johnson took home the SEC pre-season player of the year award, it seemed as if he’d become the odds-on favorite to win Player of the Year, but unfortunately, he’d never get a chance to claim that prize for himself.
