air brake technology limits US freight trains to 12,000 feet or 2.27 miles on Class I rail roads
& legislation defines 7,500 feet as a "long train" but will not restrict them to this length
as that would increase fuel consumption by 13% Based on 2019 data that also showed that:
.1% of trains were 14,000 feet. 2.65 miles
.9% were longer than 10,000 feet.

freight trains are designed to travel at 70 and 75 mph , a normally loaded freight train will move at 40 and 50 mph , an averaged freight train speed ranges from 20 - 30 mph , en example Union Pacific train averaged speed in 2021 was 25 MPH & Slow zones, hills, heavier payloads &or longer trains drop all of this to 5 or 10 mph

Passenger trains are limited to 60 mph & freight trains are limited to 50 mph on USA tracks without block signal systems

of the 130K public at-grade crossings; , 50% have automatic warning systems, 34.7% have flashing lights & gates , & 15.5% have flashing lights only & of 80K private at highway-grade crossings MOST have no warnings
