Social media has always been a recruiting and propaganda tool for the Mexican cartels and other insurgent groups. But is TikTok intentionally manipulating their algorithm to amplify the cartels? China is already using TikTok to spy and collect facial recognition data on Americans. It’s not a stretch to suspect China could be using the app to drive a pro-cartel narrative. It would further destabilize Mexico and, by extension, destabilize their biggest adversary: the United States.
