As early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were settling Nauvoo, Illinois, the Prophet Joseph Smith looked to England — sending 10 of 12 members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles overseas to do missionary work. “I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that mission saved the Church,” said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

“Joseph Smith had shown the most remarkable courage and the most remarkable prophetic insight in the trouble that they were having in Kirtland, [Ohio]. With the failure of the bank, the international economic crisis, he had every reason to keep his closest friends near by him, and he did the unthinkable. He sent them all to England.”

This Church News video, titled “Destiny of the Restoration,” features Elder Holland while he traveled to England with President M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Elder Holland praises Joseph Smith, early British missionaries and President Ballard’s example and leadership. “We love you, President,” he said. “We love you with all our heart.”
