Here's what you need to know about the NEW .338 Army Machine Gun

The new .338 Norma Magnum ammunition is the sweet spot between the 7.62mm and .50 caliber. The M-240 bravo will be replaced along with the M-16 by the Next Generation Squad Weapons family in the United States Army and Marine Corps, coming in 2022.

With an extra kick and punch up from the 5.56mm to 6.8mm and from the 7.62 NATO to .338 Norma Magnum. SIG Sauer and General Dynamics have released some brand new motivational footage of their prototypes. But there can be only one winner of the multi-million dollar bid!

The barrel for this new weapons system is reciprocating, which keeps the positive and negative recoil forces stable. This means the maximum effective range is increased while accuracy remains the same. The bidders weren't able to create polymer cased ammo to replace the brass for the .338 ammo type yet but they are working on it. Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will remember what it's like to lug the M240 around so the extra weight in ammo will definitely suck.

The XM8 and OICW were failed Army weapons programs in the past, will the NGSW go the way of the dodo?
