Secrets of THE PISTOL DRAW

In true reactive shooting, you are reacting to a stimulus, not just drawing and shooting fast. This could be a lethal force encounter where someone has a gun and starts shooting at you and you have to respond or it could be a target that is moving, has a limited exposure window, or suddenly appears. Whether in competition or life-and-death circumstances, winning can sometimes be measured in hundredths of a second at times.

From principles to process, one must have an in-depth understanding of what goes into it and then build the skills systematically.

The key to doing any handgun draw well is to strive to isolate the muscles required to do the draw while relaxing everything else. As we go faster there seems to be a tendency to tighten up the entire arm or upper body. This creates antagonistic tension which slows things down and makes movement imprecise. Remember from our previous discussions; economy of motion + sufficient effort + precision of movement = speed!
