On Thursday, a prominent Russian security official raised concerns about the increasing risk of nuclear warfare and criticized a German politician for threatening to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Dmitry Medvedev, the 57-year-old deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, which is chaired by Putin, stated in a video conference with reporters that the current state of relations between Russia and the West has reached an unprecedented low.

Medvedev also warned that any attempt to arrest Putin would be seen as a declaration of war, and could result in a Russian retaliatory strike against Germany, The South China Morning Post reported.

Asked whether the threat of a nuclear conflict has eased, Medvedev responded: “No, it hasn’t decreased, it has grown. Every day when they provide Ukraine with foreign weapons brings the nuclear apocalypse closer.”
