We’ve made about 50 Youtube videos so far this year, and as of today, the team has cost us about $210,000, in a combination of travel, salaries, benefits, equipment, and overhead. And Youtube has only made us about $20K.

Sponsors on Youtube are, sadly, a necessary evil. I don’t expect anybody wants a break in the story to talk about a sponsor.
Jake Tran’s community turned against him for sponsoring scammy products he trashed in other videos.
Johnny Harris has had dozens of videos questioning his journalism because of the sponsors he takes.
Ideally, on a news outlet- the journalism and the business side of things are completely independent, but that’s not always true.
And make that worse when the creator is in charge of everything! Even for Youtubers with communities in the millions, Youtube ads aren’t enough to keep with the high standard of quality or frequency that these videos demand- and someone has to pay the bills.

In this video, I want to break down the economics of running a Youtube channel- how views translate into revenue and as a company ourselves, which sometimes sponsors videos from other creators- what KPIs sponsors look for when finding creators.
