‘It is up to our people to decide what policy to pursue’ - Burundi FM
At a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, Burundi foreign minister Albert Shingiro told RT about his country’s stance on human rights violations that the West has been accusing Gitega of.
‘Human rights should be protected universally, should not be politicized or used selectively’, he said.
Certain countries, however, are using UN bodies to exert political pressure on others, the diplomat added, stressing that ‘Burundi is a free country that makes its own decisions’.
