Update on the Jeffery Situation 🦢🦢

Smith's Garden Town received quite a bit of sympathy on social media when they posted about Jeffery's missing mate. Being well experienced with domestic geese, I went by to offer advice on preventing a recurrence and keeping Jeffery safe in the future from either predation, or theft. They did not follow my advice to provide a kennel or enclosure of some kind to secure the geese after dark/closing. They have since acquired a new replacement mate for Jeffery, but without implementing safety changes to prevent a repeat of the fate that took his first mate. You simply cannot leave domestic fowl out at night like this, especially in a place such as this without lighting and no one present after hours to respond to their cries for help...IF you expect them to survive long. I have determined that for animal welfare reasons, it is best to now say this publicly, in hopes that they will still choose to do the right thing, and take steps to protect their domestic fowl after dark, as any good owner would be expected to do. They are not just ornate pond fixtures. They have lives, and you're responsible for protecting them. At the least, they should install bright enough security lighting to allow the geese a chance to see any predators trying to sneak up on them before it's too late. I take care of numerous domestic geese and ducks in this area who have been dumped at numerous parks and lakes by owners who no longer want them, and there is a much shortened life expectancy for these birds where they live in proximity to areas frequented by coyotes and bobcats, as Jeffery and his mate do.
