Nestorations-Brood Feathers Visible 🦉 03/22/23 17:52

Some nestorations are underway in anticipation of the first egg to be laid. While the nest is being tidied up a bit, we can clearly see a brood feather in front of the nest, and one off to the left in the back of the nest. A bit obscured now after the last zoom-in by the camera. The brood feathers will start to fall out close to an egg being laid to make the brood patch bare so the heat can be transferred from the patch to the egg. Blood vessels in the patch will also swell to keep a constant supply of heat going. While this natural process takes place, she will also pull the feathers out herself to insulate the egg.
