In this episode Attorney Steve Vondran explains what a "Doe" Defendant is. Basically, a DOE lawsuit is filed anytime a Plaintiff does not know the name of one or more Defendants. Once the name is learned (ex, via a subpoena response), the real name of the party can be added to the lawsuit. This situation often arises in illegal torrent download cases where music or movies are downloaded without being paid for or having a proper license from the moviemaker, production company, film studio, etc.
