If you received a legal demand letter informing you that you could be liable for $150,000 for copyright infringement and attorney fees for infringement of a movie, software, photo, jewelry, poem or some other copyrighted item, ask them, "did you register your copyright? and then ask: if so when?" If they did not register the copyright before the alleged infringement (or within 90 days of the publication of their creative work of authorship) they might be precluded from recovering the 150k they are bragging about, and attorney fees may not be an option. Don't get bullied. Ask to see their credentials. If they never registered their copyright, at least in the 9th Circuit (which covers California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Nevada, and Montana), then they might only be able to recover "actual damages," which could be a photo licensing fee, the value of the downloaded movie or licensing fee for software for example.
