WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL LEGAL CONSEQUENCES OF SHOWING A BOXING MATCH AT YOUR BAR, RESTAURANT, TAVERN OR CLUB WITHOUT PAYING THE PROPER COMMERCIAL BROADCASTING LICENSE

In this episode of "Mini" LITIGATION WHITEBOARD® Attorney Steve® discusses potential damages in boxing piracy cases and UFC fights, or sometimes soccer matchers. There is a difference between pirating (interception of cable or satellite signal) without the commercial license and showing it at your restaurant, bar, tavern, nightclub, sports club, barber shop or other venue. In these circumstances you need a COMMERCIAL license to broadcast and display the PPV event. If not, you can receive a legal demand letter (or worse a phone call), demanding $20,000 or more for showing the fight. This is not fun. Before you TALK TO THEM (don't), TALK TO US with a free consultation.

Our IP infringement defense law firm has helped many companies defend against Joe Hand Promotion cases, J&J Sports and the ultra-aggressive G&G Closed Circuit Events.

The damages amounts can vary and an infringing restaurant owner can be liable for up to 100,000 in enhanced damages under the Telecommunications Law (or up to $150,000 for willful infringement of the Copyright laws).

If you take a default judgement, you could be hit for actual damages, or statutory damages, plus enhanced damages, costs and attorney fees. So, these are cases you have to take very seriously, especially when there is potential for personal liability to the officers and directors of the company if they acted willfully or for personal financial gain.
