WHO WAS DR. KEN RAVIZZA?

In my opinion, he was the best professor ever and what I call a "secret life mentor." Dr. Ken was a sports psychologist who taught at Cal State Fullerton. He was a sports psychologist for Dodgers and Angels and other elite athletes. He was there when I needed a hand most, after my professional baseball playing days in the Reds organization.

I consider myself "Ravizza-trained" and still apply the skills and lessons he taught me back in 1994 (when my sports days were over and I was in need of leadership and direction) in my daily legal practice.

TRIBUTE: I wasn't one to go meet with my college professors. I always figured you could kiss up and learn a bit about what was going to be on the next exam. But that was not my style. However, in 1994 when I was done with pro ball, I was a bit lost, to be honest. Didn't know which way to go. However, Dr. Ken Ravizza was my favorite professor.

So, I decided to take a chance and do it. I set up a time, and he greeted me with his usual million dollar smile "sit down" he said. I said "Doctor Ken, I am done with baseball, my love, and I feel a piece of my heart is missing. What do I do now?"

He said "Steve, relax man, you got this. You are doing the right thing. Your presentation was great. I feel you. Just finish your degree, you will figure it all out man. Just be a good person. And learn to just trust yourself.....believe in your journey......and when the shit hits the fan.....and it will.....just go back to the breathing. Life will show you the way. Trust in it. Just trust my man."

I did as he suggested, and it made all the difference in my life. I got on track with a life that lead me into a legal career helping defend people often pursued by copyright trolls.

As I get older, I realize, we all have a chance to be a "secret mentor" to someone. Think about that awesome opportunity. RIP Ken, sorry I never got to tell you how much I loved you and your class (and I never missed one).
