It's that time of year again when new law grads are getting ready for the right of passage into the legal profession. Once you get over this hurdle, you are basically in. Here are the Attorney Steve® top 10 tips to pass the bar exam. I passed both California and Arizona bar exams.

Here are my top 10:

1. RTDQ (know what’s being asked). MBE (read the question first). Essay question (read the question first). Read the question TWO TIMES.

2. Read the facts closely (why are they throwing in these facts)?

3. Facts give rise to legal issues (as they say, you need to know the law cold – this is your bar prep)

4. OUTLINE BEFORE YOU WRITE (get all the legal issues and buzzwords lined up)

5. Write neatly, legibly, and concisely (they have to be able to read your response). My worker's comp law story.

6. Make sure to give a nice clear statement of the law, then drop in some tight legal analysis (show you know how to argue two sides of the coin). That’s the job of the lawyer

7. Don’t over or under-hydrate - Try not to drink too much water, coffee, or energy drinks (so you don’t have to constantly run to the bathroom). Time is precious.

8. Breaks: Don’t talk to other people. “I saw this, I saw that I argued this, I argued that” (this only serves to force you to second-guess – no time for that). Go off and relax.

9. Don’t feel you have to be overly exhaustive on every answer (likely, you will not have the time to show your brilliance and everything you have learned over 3 years). Your goal is to show your general competency in understanding the facts and applying the law to the facts. This is the daily job of the lawyer.

10. I did not take bar review; one thing I did was go into the law library and accessed old California bar reviews (take the actual exam, and then compare against the model answer). I did a bunch of those to get a feel for it. You can also go use flashcards and cassette tapes (if, for example, you did not take an evidence class and need a quick catch-up.

That’s it; focus, be rested, and knock it out!! Enjoy the right of passage. Don’t forget the earplugs!!

SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
