Hippocrates, an ancient Greek physician who lived in Greece and is considered as the father of medicine, was born on the Greek island of Cos around 460 BCE and died in Larissa, Thessaly, around 375 BCE.

It is challenging to separate the truth about Hippocrates' life from the later stories that have been told about him or to evaluate his medical practices objectively in the face of centuries of admiration for him as the ideal doctor.

He is the author of about 60 medical writings, the most of which were not written by him. He is admired for his high ethical standards in the practice of medicine, particularly for the Hippocratic Oath, which it is assumed he did not create.

It is well known that Hippocrates was esteemed as a doctor and educator during his lifetime. Plato, a more recent colleague, made two references to him.

Plato claimed that Hippocrates was as well-known as a physician as Polyclitus and Phidias were as sculptures when he referred to Hippocrates in the Protagoras as "the Asclepiad of Cos" who instructed students for a fee. The Phaedrus is where Plato makes his second allusion to Hippocrates, describing him as a prominent Asclepiad who practiced philosophy-based medicine.

The Hippocratic Oath, an ethical rule attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, has been used in graduation ceremonies for many medical schools and has been embraced by the medical profession throughout the years. Although nothing is known about Hippocrates' life—or even if he was the only doctor at the time going by this name—a collection of manuscripts known as the Hippocratic Collection (Corpus Hippocraticum) has survived up to the present. The collection included knowledge on medical topics as well as a set of guidelines for medical educators and their students. The Hippocratic oath is a code, or a portion of it, that has been passed down through generations of doctors.
