The issue of normalizing relations between Indonesia and Israel has resurfaced in the meeting between Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in December last year.

Despite not having diplomatic relations, the two countries have secretly been engaged in trade relations for a long time. Specifically, when the official ban on trade was lifted during the era of President Abdurrahman Wahid in 2001.

Since then, businessmen from both countries have been doing business in various commodities. Israel is also known to have lobbied several times to establish relations with Indonesia. Some officials are known to have visited Indonesia, including Prime Minister Shimon Peres in the mid-2000s to meet with President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur).

We interviewed the former Head of Mossad for Southeast Asia and also the Vice Chairman of the Indonesia-Israel Chamber of Commerce regarding trade relations and lobbying efforts that have been made. He spoke openly about the relationship between Israel and Indonesia. He was also the person behind the meeting between President Gus Dur and Prime Minister Shimon Peres
