In China, Mencius is frequently referred to as the Second Sage, which means that, according to the Confucian tradition, he is only the successor to Confucius. He was born in the state of Zou in the year 372 BCE.
Mencius' actual name was Meng Ke. "Mengzi" means "master Meng." When Jesuit scholars started translating Chinese texts into European languages, they changed his name to "Mencius." Like Confucius, it is said that Meng Ke lost his father when he was young, so his mother took care of him.
As a follower of the Confucian school, Mencius focused on moral, social, and political philosophy. He was a pivotal figure in the effort to define Confucianism.
Zisi was the grandson of the great Confucius, and Mencius learned from him. For almost four decades, this wise Chinese man visited every corner of China, advising and sharing his wisdom with the country's several emperors.
During the Song dynasty, several intellectuals rejected Mencius' understanding of Confucianism because they saw it as too conservative and conventional. Followers of Mencius were powerful feudal lords who thought they were more important than Confucius.
The book "The Mencius" describes his interactions with the kings of China. It features lengthy conversations, intricate debates, and fascinating text. Though he acknowledged the importance of the monarchy, Mencius believed that the regular citizen should be respected more.
Historians think he lived at the same time as famous philosophers like Xun Zi, Zhuangzi, Gaozi, and Plato. Mencius resigned from politics near the end of his life, frustrated that his suggestions were falling on deaf ears. He returned to Zou, where he died in his 70s or 80s.
In today's video, we'll look at some of the best Mencius quotes from this great philosopher providing an insight into his thoughts and sayings on matters of wisdom, humanity, life, destiny, compassion and life.
