Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine, One Year Later

In this video, Olga Oliker, Crisis Group Europe and Central Asia Program Director, talks about the current state of the war in Ukraine a year after Russia's invasion and reflects on the disconnect between the goals of ending the war and of bringing justice.

A year after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, both countries have been transformed, and the new normal is one of continuing war. Ukraine is devastated, infrastructure is destroyed, and millions of people forced from their homes. But Ukraine’s men and women continue to show up at recruitment offices, ready to fight.

However, Russia has not backed off and continues to define its security as requiring a compliant neighbour. Both countries feel that they can win on the battlefield. As such, neither sees any logic to ceasefires.

Yet, when it comes to thinking about how this conflict may end, there’s a certain amount of wishful thinking on all sides, she points out.
