The word compulsion involves an irresistible and persistent urge or impulse to alleviate the disturbance of an obsession. Its word history ties into the word compel, speaks of a “driving or urging.” The etymology of compulsion can reveal a meaning of “coercion, application of force (to someone) overwhelming his preferences.
