Antigua, Guatemala moved three times until it settled in its existing location. On September 11, 1541 it was destroyed by a volcano, Volcano of Water; named appropriately as the town was destroyed by a fast-moving lahar. The City is surrounded by three volcanoes. In the 1770's, the population was about 60,000. Today the population remains about the same, 60,000. There are many historic buildings throughout the City, most within walking distance from one another. Antigua is known for its coffee and volcanoes.
