African Folklore Stories | Ep. 4: Why The Elephant Has A Trunk?

Once upon a time, the Elephant had a small snout that he was proud of. It didn't cause any problems for him while he was feeding and drinking. However, his large size made it difficult for him to reach food and water without kneeling down.

One day, while drinking from a river, Crocodile attacked Elephant by grabbing his nose. The two creatures engaged in a fierce battle that lasted for hours. With each pull and tug, Elephant's nose stretched a little more until Crocodile became too tired to continue and let go.

Distraught and embarrassed, Elephant hid in the bushes. But he soon realized that his long nose was more useful than his previous small snout. He could now reach high branches and pull them down to eat the fruit and leaves without kneeling. The other Elephants saw the benefits of having a long trunk and, one by one, went to the river to taunt Crocodile to try and pull them in. But, each time, the Elephants won the tug-of-war, and Crocodile remained hungry.

From that day on, all Elephants have a long trunk, which helps them to reach food and water easily. And Crocodiles have learned not to waste their energy attacking Elephants while they drink from the river.
