Chicken Feed Conspiracy

1. There is no independent third-party report that verifies the claim that the feed was intentionally altered to reduce egg production.

2. Poultry experts stated there's no evidence that Pilgrim Pride Chicken feed or their subsidiaries have altered their feed.

3. “We confirm there have not been formulation changes to Purina poultry feed products,” Brooke Dillon, a spokesperson for Land O’Lakes, the parent company of Purina Animal Nutrition, wrote in an email. Similarly, Mary Winn Pilkington, a spokesperson for Tractor Supply, said that its suppliers confirmed there has been “no change to the nutritional profile” of their feed products.

4. "Is there a broad conspiracy? No, there's not a broad conspiracy," said University of Georgia poultry science professor Todd Applegate. "Beyond feed, there are a lot, probably even more so, things from the management and from the bird's environment that creates different things that would cause her to either go out of production or lower her production."

5. On September 17, 2009, JBS USA Holdings, Inc. announced the purchase of 64% of the shares of Pilgrim's Pride. JBS USA Holdings, Inc. is a subsidiary of Brazilian multinational JBS S.A., the largest meat processor in the world, and the largest by revenue. Currently JBS USA Holdings, Inc. owns 78.5% of the company.

6. Jayson Penn, Pilgrim's Pride’s ex-CEO is being prosecuted on federal price-fixing allegations. However, he was acquitted on all charges.

7. Purina is owned by Cargill which is untimely owned by Nestle which owns countless brands of chicken feeds to include Land O'Lakes, Texas Natural, Little Giant, Manna Pro etc.

8. Brand matters a lot less the ingredients and quality. Changing from a garbage feed to a garbage feed doesn’t change anything.

9. Decreases in egg output can be attributed by one or a combination of factors, including:
• improper nutrition (e.g., feeding the wrong type of food for desired production).
• feed freshness (e.g., using expired feed or improperly stored feed).
• shorter day length (i.e., less hours of sunlight).
• colder temperatures.
• poor management practices (e.g., not providing clean water).
• onset of parasites or viruses (e.g., such as the current devastating outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza).
• stress (e.g., fox in the henhouse!).
• age of the hen.
• overall health of the hens.

10. The path forward is simply choosing quality over quantity and realize that infrastructure is producing a lot of garbage. I’m not discounting that people are having issues with chicken and other poultry feed. They are having issues not because there is a conspiracy against them, they are having issues because they were naive enough to believe that feeding low quality grain-by-products to their chickens was going to be beneficial in the first place. There is no conspiracy stop being lazy and feed your livestock quality food plain and simple.
