The recent release of video footage showing a Russian fighter jet dumping fuel on a U.S. Air Force surveillance drone and the announcement of Poland providing Ukraine with MiG-29 fighter jets have added new complexities to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The Pentagon released declassified footage of a Russian Su-27 approaching the back of an MQ-9 Reaper drone and releasing fuel as it passed. While the video does not show the actual collision that led to the drone's crash into the Black Sea, it shows the aftermath and damage to the propeller. Russia denies any involvement in the drone's crash, and the Biden administration has called Russia's actions "reckless" while striving to maintain diplomatic communication channels.
The downing of a U.S. aircraft during a confrontation has raised concerns about a direct conflict between the United States and Russia, as it marks the first such incident since the Cold War. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, as well as other high-ranking military officials, have held their first talks since October, discussing the destruction of the drone and the tense situation.
Poland's decision to supply Ukraine with a dozen MiG-29 fighter jets marks the first NATO member to fulfill Kyiv's urgent requests for warplanes. Polish President Andrzej Duda announced that four MiGs would be supplied within days, with the rest undergoing servicing before being provided later. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged NATO countries to provide fighter jets, some members, including the U.S., have expressed hesitancy.

Fair use is the right to use a copyrighted work under certain conditions without permission of the copyright owner. The doctrine helps prevent a rigid application of copyright law that would stifle the very creativity the law is designed to foster. It allows one to use and build upon prior works in a manner that does not unfairly deprive prior copyright owners of the right to control and benefit from their works. Together with other features of copyright law like the idea/expression dichotomy discussed above, fair use reconciles the copyright statute with the First Amendment.
