Installing the Funnyplaying SPIPS GBA SP IPS Screen in a GBA SP (AGS-001)

I finally got a SP version of the Funnyplaying IPS (SPIPS?) kit. Supposedly all of the issues are resolved with that new hardware revision compared to the V1 (GBA) kits, and as far as I can tell, that's true. There is only one version of the SP kit from funnyplaying so I've removed the "v2" from the title of this video. It was misleading and incorrect. This is technically a v1 kit but since it's based on the v2 GBA kit, I accidentally stuck it in.

Originally I shoehorned one of the GBA (AGB-001) kits into a GBA SP and it actually went surprisingly smoothly. The install process is largely the same except that you only need to solder one wire instead of three (incremental brightness control instead of using L & R to increase or decrease) and the kit comes with the lens already laminated to the LCD. The trimming required is the exact same. Brightness control (and therefore all soldering) is completely optional and the kit will default at the "middle" level of brightness.

There are still reasons to shoehorn in a GBA (AGB-001) kit though -- for example better brightness control and more brightness options. The downside is that sticking the screen to the lens is rather difficult (or at least, something I struggled with). Otherwise, either kit is a fantastic way to revitalize an old and busted SP or any SP really. This kit works with both AGS-001 (AGS) and AGS-101 (AGT) revision SP consoles. The install is the same for both variants.

Quite frankly, I believe this is the best Funnyplaying kit yet.

None of the issues that I noticed in the above captures of the v1 kit are present in the v2 kit.

Confused/intimidated by the sheer number of backlight kits now? I don’t blame you. I had to create an image based guide just to keep everything straight myself. There’s a new section of the wiki that has a more subjective look at all the different kits: https://gameboy.github.io/wiki/backli...
