In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Paul describes the character of people in the last days, warning that they will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. It is clear from this passage that Paul believed the last days would be marked by widespread arrogance and boasting, along with a host of other negative traits. He urged Timothy to avoid such people and to instead hold to the truth that he had been taught, recognizing that Scripture is able to make one wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
