A Man is RICH in Proportion to... Henry David Thoreau Quotes.
American essayist, poet, and practical philosopher Henry David Thoreau (born July 12, 1817, Concord, Massachusetts, U.S.—died May 6, 1862, Concord) is renowned for having lived the Transcendentalism doctrines as recorded in his masterwork, Walden (1854), and for having been a fervent supporter of civil liberties, as evidenced in the essay "Civil Disobedience" (1849).
It is widely acknowledged that Henry David Thoreau made a significant contribution to the New England transcendentalism literary and philosophical movement in America. Over the course of his intellectual career, nature and the way that life is lived have been the two main themes that run through all of his essays, novels, and poetry.
The fact that the final two pieces written by Thoreau during his lifetime were "The Final Days of John Brown" and "The Succession of Forest Trees" serves as a powerful illustration of the ongoing significance of these two themes (both in 1860).
Thoreau identified with the post-Socratic schools of Greek philosophy, particularly the Cynics and Stoics, in his writings on morality and politics. These schools used philosophy to confront everyday human experience. His literature on nature and the outdoors combined scientific observation and cataloging with transcendentalist interpretations of the natural world. Thoreau used these interpretations of nature to discuss how humans should or should not live in several of his books.
It is widely acknowledged that Thoreau's writings anticipated key ideas in later philosophical movements like existentialism and pragmatism.
Thoreau's naturalistic interests shifted more toward science at the end of his life; he sought a close analysis of local animals and kept meticulous records of his discoveries.
