Backwashing a bead filter

In this video I just show you how I back wash my filter on my koi pond. It is fairly simple to do.

Here are the steps to backwashing the filter.
Step 1: Turn off the pump
Step 2: Turn the valve to back wash
Step 3: If you have a valve on the backwash make sure to open it.
Step 4: Turn on the pump while on backwash for 30sec to a minute
Step 5: Turn off pump and shut of any valves you have on the pump (if you have valves on the pump).
Step 6: If you have an air blower installed turn the air blower on for 30 seconds then off for 10 seconds (assembly valve should still be on backwash).
Step 7: Do step 6 for 3 to 5 times.
Step 8: While the pump is still off turn the assembly valve to rinse (open valves that you have on the pump area, if you have any)
Step 9: Turn on the pump, then turn on the air blower. Do this for 30sec to a minute. Then turn the pump of first and after the pump is off turn off the air blower.
Step 10: Move the valve back to backwash. (while the pump is off)
Step 13: Drain about 20% of the water from your pond while the filter is on backwash.
Step 14: Turn of the pump, turn the assembly valve to filter, and then turn the pump back on.
Step 15: All done. now just fill up the pond with some more water. Make sure to use water conditioner.

How often should you do this:
It typically varies depending on feeding rate and amount of fish. If you are not power feeding your fish and don't have the pond over stocked. Than 20% once a month is good. If you feed your fish a lot and have to many fish you may have to do this more often than a month. Best is to test your water periodically and set what the parameters are. As in your Ph, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
