This is the moment a group of soldiers lash their combat jackets together as a makeshift rope to save a villager trapped in a frozen pond.

The man - not named in local media in Changchun, Jilin province, north-east China - had fallen through the ice and was trapped up to his neck in the water.

As he begins to struggle the troops strip off their camouflage jackets and lash the sleeves together to make a rescue rope.

Then - as seen in a video later shared on Douyin, China's version of TokTok - they hurl the rope across the ice to him.

As they haul the man out, some of the squad smash up the ice to help him slip through quicker.

Netizens praised their quick thinking and applauded the successful rescue.

Douyin user 'Lakeside business wedding car phone number' said: "When the man saw the Chinese soldiers, he knew in his heart that he was saved. Salute to the Chinese soldiers! Thank you!"

And user 'roman soldier' wrote: "This is the correct way to save lives and ensure your own safety."
