We went to Galena on 12/13/2015 for the "Night of Illumination", they had thousands of white Galena bags with candles lit in them it was beautiful! Sunday was rainy but we had a blast walking through the shops, looking for Christmas items. We stayed at the Stoney Creek Hotel which was terrific, the bed was just right, a terrific staff and a nice hot tub and pool area. We ate dinner at the Galena Brewing Company, also very good, tested house brews in their rustic styled seating area and watched many NFL games on their televisions in every corner of the room. I would believe any time of year would be a great time in Galena! The first American settler arrived in Galena in 1821, and by 1828, the population was estimated at 10,000. In 1861 Galena was one of Illinois largest cities with a population at that time around 14,000 due to lead mining, it had the largest river boat port north of St. Louis. It was the home of nine generals during the civil war, Augustus Louis Chetlain, John Oliver Duerr, Ulysses Simpson Grant, Jasper Adalmorn Maltby, Ely Samuel Parker, John Aaron Rawlins, William Rueben Rowley, John Corson Smith, and John Eugene Smith. Galena was also the 1865 home of the 18th president Ulysses S Grant which you can visit and walk through, Galena also has the Grant museum. Today the population of Galena is 3,429 dismal in comparison to 1861, but this small Midwestern town is rich with American history, many of the original buildings still stand and have become candy shops, antique stores, clothing shops, and restaurants. This was our second trip to Galena, we were here in the fall of 2014.
