Dream Theatre - Best of Times Solo Guitar

This song is a tribute to Howard, the father of Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who passed away in late 2008. So that was something that was a big part of my life and I went through it while making this record. And unfortunately, he died before the recording was finished. But I wanted to write a song that would praise our life together. I didn't want to focus on the six months of fighting cancer and dying, I wanted to focus on the 41 amazing years that preceded it. And I wrote this song as a tribute to him, and fortunately I was able to play it for him before he died. I had a version that I sang and played it for her at her bedside and we held hands and cried. One of the most emotional experiences of my life, but something I will always be grateful for. You know, a lot of times people write songs for their loved ones afterwards. But it was a great gift to be able to do that and share it with him before he died."
