On October 1st, 2022, a fatal crowd crush incident occurred after a football match at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency, East Java. Following the home team Arema's defeat by their rival Persebaya Surabaya, around 3,000 Arema supporters entered the field.The police said that the supporters caused a riot and attacked the players and team officials, so the police tried to protect the players and stop the riot, but the crowd instead clashed with security forces. In response, the anti-riot police unit fired tear gas, with some of it aimed towards the south stands where there was no altercation,triggering the audience to run to avoid it. This caused a crowd crush at the exit gate, resulting in a number of supporters experiencing asphyxiation.
