Depression as a Healthy Adaptation

If a child suffers abuse and reacts with depression and anxiety, that's a sign that their mind, body, and brain are functioning well. In depressing environments/circumstances, depression is the appropriate (healthy, normal) response.

Where does that leave adults? We live in depressing, anxiety-inducing times. Is it healthy, here, to feel depressed or anxious? And is it possible for it to be a "healthy" response to have, but at the same time be a form of suffering? "Mental Illness" is a murky subject.
