Reserve currencies, which are currencies held in significant quantities by governments and institutions as part of their foreign exchange reserves, eventually lose their dominance and are replaced by another currency. It could be a currency backed by a cryptocurrency or technology, or a currency backed by gold. Marc Faber suggests that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) are not likely to form a united currency due to their lack of trust in each other.
